Best cafes in Berlin for working
Cafe μ (mü)
Small and fresh, Cafe μ is a serene place to work. With wooden countertops and two large armchairs by the window, the interior walks the line of trendy without being pretentious. In summer, tables and benches sit out on the quiet leafy street, so working won't mean you have to abandon the sun. Cafe μ also make all their cakes and sandwiches in house, and the friendly owner will gladly whip you up the perfect caffeine cocktails to get you through the day.
Giro Coffee Bar
One of the few cafes with coffee worth stopping for in Berlin's West, you'll find Giro on the refined Charlottenberg street, Knesebeckstrasse. Outside of the hip wonderland that is Berlin's trendier suburbs, this cafe is usually quiet apart from the occasional soup rush around midday. While the main barista, Ralf, might seem frosty at first, he is charming once you get him talking. He bakes the banana bread himself, it's brilliant. Unlike many of the third wave coffee shops spreading through the city, Giro has roasts its own Italian style blend ideal for espresso.
Attached to its hotel, Michelberger's cafe and bar are open dusk til dawn. And while hotel bars are usually duller than a German outfit, Michelberger is an unexpected moment of taste. At the entrance are a series of reclining lounges divided by wire blocks filled with books. Behind that are long wooden tables designed to be compatible with productivity, while out the back is a extravagant outdoor area filled with plants and shaded seating arrangements. The place has a steady buzz without ever becoming too crowded, so you'll be able to work, and perhaps later play, in peace.
Low key and slightly cooky, Leuchtstoff has an 'echt' Berlin feel to it. While the front end of the store is light and simple, dominated by a large window, the back room feels like an eccentric cubby, the perfect quiet spot to nest for the day. In the section you'll find a small group people tapping away at their laptop pausing occasionally for a trip to the counter in search of homemade cake and a flat white. The coffee at Leuchtstoff superb, and their summer-time cold brew is winner.
Walking into Bonanza is like walking into a Scandinavian dream: clean, stylish and abundantly cool. Their Kreuzberg store is part of a secluded lot facing away from the street, removed enough from the busy street to provide a bit of placidity. Behind the cafe is the roastery, which one can see through the windows in the cafe. The benefit of this of course is the huge selection of coffee on offer, from showcased beans to experimental brewing methods, Bonanza serves some of Berlin's best coffee. Despite its status as the center point of chic, something about the Scandinavian aura of Bonanza enforces a level of tranquility perfect for work.
In the colorful district of Kreuzkölln, Papilles is open from morning to well into the night, making it ideal for both early risers and those who don't get their juices flowing until later in the day. Outside of weekend breakfasts, it is usually not too busy, and its light, modern interior means it is a relaxing spot to settle. Most of the baristas at Papilles are from Australia and New Zealand, and take their coffee very seriously. Their menu is filled with dream brunches from salmon Eggs Benedict and to fresh avocado with feta, so if you like a more substantial bite while you work then Papilles is your guy.
Shakespeare and Sons
There are few things more soothing than working among books, and this coupled with the gentle babble of cafe sounds, makes Shakespeare and Sons ideal. Part book store, part cafe, there is a calm composure to the place that is quite special. With a selection of deliciously filled bagels, Shakespeare and Sons is exactly how I imagine a miniature version of the world's most welcoming library.
Connected to the luxury store Voo, Companion Coffee is is ideal if your looking for a glamorous coffee-friendly hideout on one of Berlin's most popular streets. What it lacks in the way of food, it made up with its chic, minimalistic style. Thankfully, the staff retain a sweetness often lacking in places so on-trend. Giving off an aura of calm, you make yourself a work station for the day.
